I enjoy exploring different volunteer roles in the arts and events industry, gaining hands-on experience while discovering where my passions truly lie. Contributing to a production and seeing the final polished outcome presented to audiences always gives me a strong sense of satisfaction.
Front Of House Volunteer Work @FortCanning, May 2025
As part of my Arts Management module, I volunteered as Front-of-House (FOH) crew for Shakespeare in the Park: Macbeth at Fort Canning. I assisted with pre-show setup, including arranging seating on the lawn and preparing VIP chairs with programmed books. During the event, I welcomed guests, encouraged donations in exchange for programmed books, and guided audiences to their designated areas. Later in the night, I supported entrance registration by ensuring only registered and paid guests entered, while communicating and coordinating with SRT interns, part-timers, and fellow volunteers. After the show, I distributed posters promoting SRT’s online platform and thanked guests as they exited. This experience helped me step out of my comfort zone, become more independent, adapt quickly, stay aware on the ground, and understand the responsibilities of an FOH role.
AAF Production Design Volunteer Work
I contributed both to the initial proposal planning in my Arts Management module and to the execution of the final artwork. My idea on using puppets was selected and brought forward to the official event. After returning from a month of hospitalization, I rejoined the team to draft, design, and create. I experimented with different construction methods, modifying prototypes, and learning new skills such as using a sewing machine. On setup day at the F1 Pit Building, I collaborated with other volunteers to draw and paint a large wall with trees with knowledge on elements of design and principles of composition. Through this experience, I witnessed the full process of bringing an arts project to life—from research and concept development to hands-on creation and final installation. This project helped me realize how much I enjoy this area of art-making.
Across my volunteer experiences, I’ve learned that taking the first step to commit can be challenging, but I constantly remind myself that each opportunity helps me grow, gain valuable skills, and build experience for my future. Through these projects, I’ve enjoyed observing how different people contribute to the arts in their own unique ways—from their working styles to their leadership approaches. Being surrounded by individuals with diverse methods and strengths has allowed me to learn from them, stay inspired, and continue improving in every role I take on.
